In 2025, a bill was introduced in the North Carolina General Assembly to ban the intentional release of Mylar and latex balloons. Legislation upholding a balloon release ban would mark a significant step towards the protection of North Carolina resources such as energy infrastructure and economically-significant and endangered species. Simultaneously, such a law would improve the health and safety of residents state-wide.
A balloon release ban is an easy solution to stop litter at the source without government expense. We understand that balloon litter adversely affects the appearance, wellness, and productivity of our state. Banning the intentional release of balloons prevents the introduction of unnecessary waste into our environment, communities, and public spaces.
We the undersigned, a diverse cohort of North Carolina organizations, businesses, institutions, and communities, call the Senate Standing Committee to urgently pass a law implementing a statewide ban on balloon releases.
