Reducing plastic pollution in North Carolina requires practical policy solutions that address waste at its source, including limiting preventable forms of litter. Targeted policy solutions that reduce preventable plastic waste, such as balloon litter, are key to protecting North Carolina’s environment. Legislation upholding a balloon release ban would mark a significant step towards the protection of North Carolina resources such as energy infrastructure and economically-significant and endangered species. Simultaneously, such a law would improve the health and safety of residents state-wide and across the country, with balloon litter able to travel thousands of miles. 

A balloon release ban is an easy solution to stop litter at the source without government expense. We understand that balloon litter adversely affects the appearance, wellness, and productivity of our neighborhoods. Banning the intentional release of balloons prevents the introduction of unnecessary waste into our environment, communities, and public spaces. 

We the undersigned, a diverse cohort of organizations, businesses, institutions, and communities, support evidence-based policies that reduce plastic pollution, including measures to limit or prohibit intentional balloon releases.
